POSITION SUMMARY:
The Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida, Morsani College of Medicine, Jerome Breslin laboratory is seeking a Research Associate who will be involved in ongoing laboratory projects studying microvascular hyperpermeability and lymphatic dysfunction associated with systemic inflammatory responses and metabolic disorders. The position will involve performing surgery on rats and mice for intravital microscopy of the microcirculation and mesenteric lymphatic vessels, isolation of mesenteric vessels and lymphatics from rats or donated human tissue, maintenance of endothelial cell cultures, mouse colony management, and performing a variety of cell biology techniques, including protein isolation and Western blotting, RNA collection, single cell RNA-Seq, RT-PCR, immunostaining, and confocal image acquisition. This position also involves providing training for postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate students. The Research Associate will maintain an inventory of supplies, optimize reagent and resource utilization, and be responsible for ensuring a structured, organized environment for the smooth operation of the lab. Additional responsibilities will be assigned as needed to advance the laboratory's research.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs intravital microscopy and vessel isolation procedures for evaluation of physiology and for biochemical analyses.
Performs protein and RNA isolation and analyses, and tissue preparation for immunostaining and confocal microscopy.
Perform statistical analysis of data using specially designed computer software, interface computers with data collection equipment, maintains logs and records of observations, findings, and results for use in presentations and publications.
Writes and publishes scientific papers highlighting recent advances discovered in the laboratory. Maintain a well-stocked, organized laboratory [inventory and ordering]; facilitate and participate in the smooth and collegial operation of the research group; train new laboratory members as needed.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
Master's degree from an accredited institution with demonstrated record of academic research achievement, or professional qualifications in the field of specialization above those which would be equivalent to the highest degree. Must meet university criteria for appointment to the rank of Research Associate.
PREFERRED:
This position requires a PhD in medical sciences or MD degree and at least 1 year of postdoctoral research experience. Previous experience with small animal surgery and intravital microscopy. Previous experience with study of microvascular permeability and endothelial barrier function studies. Previous experience with studying lymphatic vessel function. Expertise in cell and molecular biology. Experience with rat and mouse handling, including breeding. Experience with single cell transcriptomics. Experience with regulatory compliance, including managing biosafety and IACUC protocols. Publication history in peer-reviewed journals.
