Respiratory Virus Surveillance Coordinator/Epidemiologist - Remote (Biotech)



SUMMARY

Under the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC) cooperative agreement, Heluna Health, and the Division of Communicable Disease Control (DCDC) of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), recruiting for a Respiratory Virus Surveillance Coordinator/ Epidemiologist for the Clinical Epidemiology Section of the COVID Control Branch (CCB).

The CCB provides scientific leadership on SARS-CoV-2 and bridges surveillance of other respiratory viruses to inform public health decision-making and action. Founded in 2023 and building on lessons learned through the CDPH COVID-19 response, our Branch utilizes genomic epidemiology, wastewater surveillance and forecasting, in addition to traditional disease surveillance methods, to monitor respiratory virus disease activity in California. CCB is also poised to support other respiratory outbreaks as they emerge. The Respiratory Virus Surveillance Coordinator/Epidemiologist will manage and facilitate various activities related to grants and budgets, enhanced surveillance efforts and respiratory virus data management and reporting.

If selected for an interview, candidates will be expected to have knowledge in R, Python, and/or other similar languages. The position will interact and collaborate with several multidisciplinary CDPH teams as well as other internal and external partners as they contribute to the CCB's mission and vision.

Salary range: $82,000 to $110,000 annually depending on experience/qualifications

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  • Assist with day-to-day coordination of statewide respiratory virus surveillance, including data entry, database maintenance, data interpretations, and report or dashboard generation. Interact with local health departments, hospital clinicians and laboratories, and medical record departments to collect data and conduct follow-up.
  • Participate in and coordinate ongoing development, testing, implementation, and evaluation of dashboards and other reports. Troubleshoot problems reported by dashboard users. Create and update technical documentation for dashboards and reports to ensure users can utilize dashboards as part of their routine workflow. Respond to data requests in a fast-paced environment, while ensuring quality and accuracy.
  • Assist with data management, analysis, and quality control; create and test dashboards and metrics; review definitions and calculations for key metrics; assist with development of scope, specifications, and visualization for metrics and indicators.
  • Utilize statistics and research methods commonly used in epidemiological research to analyze and report on public health data. Assist with compilation of data and preparation of tables, graphs, and charts for analytic projects and grant reporting.
  • Contribute information to daily and weekly reports to CDPH leadership.
  • Assist with the communication of priorities between federal, state, and local stakeholders to assess and communicate needed changes.
  • Independently prepare portions of reports for proposals and other products as needed.
  • Manage collaborative projects with teams outside of the COVID Control Branch.
  • Collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • Perform other duties as directed by leadership.

  • Use Microsoft Teams to communicate, store files, save call notes, work on documents collaboratively and maintain resources for stakeholders.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated ability to manage, implement and report on complex projects and public health surveillance data
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with public health and healthcare professionals and internal partners
  • Understanding of the fundamentals and principles of public health and public health surveillance
  • Able to collaborate effectively across multiple sectors and teams
  • Knowledge and application of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements and protection of health information
  • High level analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Completes assignments in a timely and efficient manner
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and work independently
  • Demonstrate reliability and integrity
  • Fluency in spoken English is required 

Education/Experience

  • Master's degree in public health or related field, or equivalent work experience (e.g., 2 or more years working in a quantitative public health setting), required.
  • Experience implementing and managing public health or other related programs, required.
  • Experience in grant writing, grant reporting, and grant management, strongly preferred.
  • Experience in budget management, required.
  • Experience supervising staff, preferred.

This is currently a remote position with the possibility of occasional in-person work at the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).
