Engineer-Operational Risk (Finance)
JOB DESCRIPTION
Primary purpose:
The Operational Risk Engineer will play a critical role in supporting the risk management element of Tallgrass' API 1173 Pipeline Safety Management Systems (PSMS), TOPSafe. This position involves working with various teams across the organization to identify, assess, and mitigate risks associated with Tallgrass operations.Minimum requirements:
Education:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Engineering or a related discipline
- A minimum of 5 years direct work experience in pipeline risk management may be considered as a substitute for a degree.
- Minimum five (5) years of direct work experience within Engineering, Operations, or project management within the pipeline industry.
- Knowledge and experience in operation of pipeline, measurement, pump stations, compressor stations, storage tanks, and all related equipment
- Experience with industry codes and standards including CFR 192 and 195 and API 1173
- Strong leadership, communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to manage multiple groups comprised of professionals with varying disciplines, backgrounds and experience levels.
- Intermediate proficiency level in MS Office applications that may include but are not limited to Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a driving record satisfactory to the company and its insurers (for travel).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills paired with the ability to develop creative and efficient solutions
- Excellent customer service skills and ability to work with all levels of management as well as employees in corporate and field offices.
- Strong project coordination, planning, organizational, presentation, report writing and overall project management skills.
- The individual must be self-motivated and willing to learn new and changing technologies.

Above the minimum requirements, not required but advantageous in this position:
- Experience implementing the Risk Element of API 1173
- Experience in pipeline operations, pipeline design, pipeline repair, and pipeline integrity issues such as corrosion control, pipeline assessment, fitness-for-service evaluation, risk management, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Engineering Critical Assessment (ECA), failure assessment, DOT Code requirements and compliance.
- Advanced degree in Engineering, Business or a related field.
- Current and active PE licensing.
- Experience leading Process Hazard Analysis (PHAs)
- Experience with industry codes and standards including ASME B31.4, B31.8, B31.8S, API RP 1176, API 1173, API 1163, API 1183, API 579, API 1104, API 1160 and NACE Standards.
- The annual salary for this position will be $95,000 - $157,000/yr.
- Execute the risk management program across the organization that reveals and manages risk and makes compliance and risk reduction routine while adhering to API 1173 guidelines.
- Conduct thorough risk assessments for pipeline operations, identifying potential hazards and their impacts.
- Develop and maintain risk registers, documenting identified risks, their severity, and likelihood.
- Coordinate and schedule meetings to develop the risk register with stakeholders throughout the company.
- Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies to reduce or eliminate identified risks.
- Collaborate with engineering, operations, maintenance and other stakeholders to design and apply risk controls.
- Monitor the effectiveness of risk mitigation measures and make necessary adjustments.
- Ensure compliance with API 1173 PSMS and other relevant regulatory requirements.
- Prepare and maintain documentation related to risk assessments, mitigation plans, and compliance activities.
- Interpret risk results to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Promote awareness of risk management principles and practices throughout the organization including providing training and support on risk management policies, procedures, and standards.
- Provide guidance and support on risk-related issues and best practices.
- Participate in the investigation of pipeline incidents and near-misses to identify root causes.
- Analyze incident data to identify trends and areas for improvement in risk management.
- Support implementation and continuous improvement of Risk Management in the Tallgrass Management of Change Program.
- Develop and maintain risk management policies, procedures, and standards.
- Collect and establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor and measure the effectiveness of the risk management program.
- Work with Departmental Risk Owners to populate departmental risk registers and manage and improve company Master Risk Register.
- Develop and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders and external partners to ensure effective risk management practices are in place.
- Responsible for maintaining hazard analysis documentation.
- Incorporate company Lessons Learned into the risk management program, including learning from external events and past incidents.
- Coordinate with and support Enterprise Risk Management and Pipeline Integrity Management Programs.
- Track completion of risk mitigation activities, with the assistance of various company departments.
- Demonstrate and enforce the highest professional integrity, ethics and safety discipline.
- Demonstrate and reinforce a culture of safety and regulatory compliance.
- Foster a positive open work environment, systems approaches and disciplined execution of all assigned tasks.
