The Denver Operations of Tetra Tech is seeking a Rockies & Midwest Biology Team Lead . The biology team includes wildlife and wetland scientists that work primarily in the Rockies and Midwest regions. This role includes supervising and leading a group of biologists, which includes technical and supervisory support, facilitating cohesion within the group, tracking staff availability, and helping identify appropriate staff for a variety of projects primarily within our energy practice. Our energy practice includes surveys, permitting, and other biological support from preconstruction through postconstruction for wind and solar electric power generation, electric transmission lines and substations, natural gas pipelines, and other related facilities.
The successful candidate will have a solid technical background in biology/ecology and prior leadership/supervisory and field experience. This fulltime position will report through our Lakewood, CO office. Ideally, the successful candidate will be located in the Colorado Front Range region.
Your Role:
• Perform duties as Biology Team Lead, including but not limited to managing staff availability, organizing and leading team calls, and training junior and mid-level staff.
• Work closely with project managers to identify appropriate staff for project work.
• Act as supervisor to biologists who report to the Denver Operations.
• Lead routine/recurring workload conference calls with the biology team.
• Maintain and manage the fieldwork calendar for the biology team.
• Hire and onboard new staff when needed.
• Identify and coordinate technical trainings for staff.
• Proactively address staff and project concerns.
• Handle multiple projects and tasks, coordinate effectively with others, and work independently and within a team.
• Promote Tetra Tech's Health and Safety Program, which includes ensuring directly reporting staff have completed trainings and are aware of safety protocols.
• Write technical reports, review peer-prepared reports, and write proposals.
• Coordinate and facilitate acquisition of equipment for the Rockies and Midwest biology team.
• Provide high-level technical support related to biology/ecology and use strategic thinking to address biology/ecology concerns of renewable energy (wind power, solar power), traditional energy, linear infrastructure (i.e., transmission lines and pipelines), and other types of projects.
• Effectively support client and agency strategy discussions regarding biological resource considerations for projects.
• Support project development (i.e., work scopes, proposals, and costs) and promote a high level of technical competence, consistency, and quality in our work products.
Qualifications:
• A bachelor's degree in an environmental program such as Biology, Ecology, or Environmental Science or related curriculum along with a minimum of 10 years of relevant environmental experience, including supervising, management, and field work. Master's degree preferred.
• Applied knowledge of ecological assessment, environmental impact analysis, environmental due diligence studies, natural/biological resources management, and habitat conservation planning. Types of studies typically required for projects include avian use and/or bat surveys, habitat delineations, specialized studies for listed species, wetland delineations/evaluations and permitting, and post-construction mortality studies.
• A strong technical leader capable of coordinating, organizing, and facilitating collaboration of teams.
• Excellent interpersonal communication, oral presentation, and verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience with environmental permitting related to wetlands and wildlife.
• Experience with the USFWS Wind Energy Guidelines and eagle take permitting under BGEPA, including the development of ECPs and EITP applications and negotiation of permit conditions.
• Experience with USACE and CWA Section 404 permitting.
• Ability to review, synthesize, and interpret biological resources information.
• Strong technical report writer/editor. Experience in providing effective peer review of technical and client-oriented work products.
• Ability to think critically, strategize, and use a flexible approach to problem solving.
• Experience in wetland and natural resources field activities, technical report writing, and permitting.
• Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented work environment.
• Excellent organization and oral/written communications skills are required.
• Ability to prioritize a variety of assignments in time-critical situations.
• Ability to analyze data and draw valid, defensible conclusions.
• A willingness to learn and be adaptable.
• A pre-employment drug screen in compliance with federal regulations is required, along with a physical if needed.
• Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.
Compensation:
Salary: $95,000 - $125,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience and demonstrated work experience in the described role, skills, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location, education and certifications as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position.
